Episode 113: The Serpent’s Pupil

In the first half of the episode, we see Kabuto and Orochimaru talking about their plans and strategy. This acts as a review of a large part of the series story, going all the way back to the Chuunin exams, probably almost 2 years ago now. They review how Orochimaru tested, watched, and tested again Sasuke’s skills to see if he was worthy of being inhabited by Orochimaru. Meanwhile, Sasuke sits in meditation in his room. As Kabuto leaves, commenting on how Orochimaru’s body is wearing down and won’t last much longer, Sasuke get’s up. While Orochimaru sits in his bed, pondering on how he would take over Sasuke’s body, a blade flies through the door at Orochimaru. Barely blocking it by letting it stab him in his arms, the door then gives way to Sasuke, holding the blade. Sasuke tells Orochimaru how his drive for revenge would have let him do anything, even giving up his body. However, Sasuke didn’t like how Orochimaru did things, nor did he think Orochimaru was strong enough. Sasuke approaches Orochimaru, and just before giving the final blow, something flies out of Orochimaru’s mouth. Now we see his true form. After so many experiments and tests and manipulations to his own body, Orochimaru had turned into a great white snake, with a human-like head. With snakes coming off his body, Orochimaru surrounds Sasuke. Using the seal on his neck, Sasuke transforms freeing himself.

Episode 114: Eye of the Hawk

Orochimaru first does a little bit of reminiscing to how he got to where he was, with all of his experiments, and all of his efforts. It acts mostly as a reminder of all the stuff that Orochimaru has done to get Sasuke. We then watch as Sasuke and Orochimaru struggle in this final battle. Sadly, the animation is a little less than desired for a final battle. Sasuke succeeds in cutting of the snake head of Orochimaru. However, the blood from his body paralyzes Sasuke, and he is drawn into another dimension created by Orochimaru. In this realm, Orochimaru has complete control and is able to overtake the bodies of others. While in this state (which looks like a big blob of purple tentacle things), Orochimaru goes in for the kill. However, with the Sharingan, Sasuke is able to reverse the Justu onto Orochimaru, and instead of perishing, he actually absorbs one of the legendary Sanin. By this time, Kabuto returns to the room to discover Sasuke over the dead snake body of Orochimaru. Kabuto asks what happens, but can tell from Sasuke that Orochimaru is indeed dead, and is in fact now a part of Sasuke. Kabuto let’s Sasuke walk out as he ponders on the implications of this event.

Episode 115: Zabuza’s Blade

You remember Zabuza right? The guy with the huge sword with a hole in the middle? From about episode 15-20 of the FIRST series? Yeah, it’s THAT Zabuza that get’s brought back up. Before I get ahead of myself, however, let’s start from the beginning. Sasuke goes to one of the labs of Orochimaru and releases Suigetsu. This ninja is a peculiar one that seems to be able to convert his body to water at will, and was being held by Orochimaru for experiments. Sasuke asks him to come with him and be a part of his team. Suigetsu agrees on one condition: they have to find Zabuza’s sword first. They remember that it was at Zabuza’s grave. When they get there they discover it was taken long ago by a man named Tenzen Daikoku. Sasuke is able to trick Suigetsu into a competition of sorts, into who can get to the sword first. In the process, Sasuke tests Suigetsu. Suigetsu storms the house of Tenzen and without any difficulty at all rips apart the home and all of the security. He finds the sword, then tears down the house by destroying the supporting pillars in a single swing. Once done, Suigetsu Joins Sasuke, as agreed, and they then head to the southern hideout to find another team member.

Episode 116: Guardian of the Iron Wall

In this episode, Sasuke and Suigetsu continue on their journey to complete their team. Knowing all of Orochimaru’s hideouts and facilities well, they head out to one of a few prisons. This particular prison held individuals intended for experiments and test subjects. It’s called the Southern Hideout, and the only guard at this location is a women Name Karin. She has an incredible ability to sense chakra, which is why she is left as the only guard. This ability is also what makes her a candidate for Sasuke’s team. She is reluctant to leave the prison, but Sasuke frees all of the prisoners, telling them to spread the word that Orochimaru is dead. Turns out, she met him in the years he was training with Orochimaru, and since then has pretty much held a secret obsession since. She always plays tough, but then seems to have an alternate personality that swoons at anything Sasuke does. In other words, it didn’t take much convincing. And it also becomes extremely annoying. Since all of the prisoners have been released, she joins up (although admits that she is just going the same direction).

Episode 117: Juugo of the Northern Hideout

Now, only needing one more member for a complete group, Sasuke’s team heads to the northern Hideout. This is where the infamous Jugo is held. He is the Ninja that had the natural ability to transform his body, and from which Orochimaru was able to get his curse mark. Apparently, the guy is an out of control killer. Meanwhile, Naruto and Sakura are called in to meet with Tsunade. Jiraiya is there, and the Naruto and him have a nice little reunion. Tsunade then explains that Orochimaru is dead, and killed by Sasuke. Naruto thinks that means Sasuke is free, and will be returning. Tsunade corrects him saying that Sasuke probably has an evil agenda, and that he would not be returning. They decide that they must chase after Uchiha Itachi to find Sasuke. Back at the northern Hideout, it looks like Sasuke is going to have a tough time with Jugo.

Episode 118: Formation

Going back to Jugo, and Sasuke’s team, we learn a bit more about Jugo. From an early age, he had murderous intentions that were difficult to control. He hid himself until the urges past. Then he met Kimimaroo (the guy who grew his own bones as weapons), who was able to suppress his urges. While sitting in jail, in the Norther Hideout, Jugo can tell people are coming. He deliberates if it will be male or female, and whether or not to kill. Sasuke and team fights through a horde of curse-marked prisoners and finally make their way to Jugo’s cell. Jugo explodes at Sasuke, anticipating the kill, and is not surprised when Sasuke releases his own curse mark. However, Sasuke is able to calm Jugo using his Sharingan. Seeing Kimimaroo in Sasuke, he joins, and the team is complete.

Kakashi Gaiden – Episode 119: A Boy’s Life on the Battlefield – Part 1

For the next two episodes, we take a brief break from the main storyline to learn a bit more about Kakashi’s past. The episode takes place during the third Great Shinobi war. Team Minato is tasked with destroying a critical bridge in the Grass country. Kakashi is taking the lead in this mission as he just barely got promoted to a Junin. His team mates bring gifts, as is customary, except for Uchiha Obito, who quickly is shown to be informal in his duties (i.e. he always shows up late and comes up with excuses). Nevertheless they leave for their mission. Soon, they come up against some enemy ninja. Kakashi is hasty in using a new technique and showing off his new position as Junin, and has to be saved by Minato, his teacher. That evening, Minato explains to Obito why Kakashi is so strict and difficult on Obito who is so relaxed. Kakashi’s father, who was greatly respected, was tasked with a mission that was particularly difficult, and he intentionally failed in order to save his teammates. Kakahi’s father was ridiculed and despised because of this, and Kakahi vowed to always be completely obedient to his responsibilities. Minato then leaves as he is needed elsewhere. The three young ninja then run into some enemy Rock ninja. Rin, one of their comrades is taken captive. Kakashi, because of his father’s experience decided to follow through with his mission, but Obito decides to go after their captive teammate.

Kakashi Gaiden – Episode 120: A Boy’s Life on the Battlefield – Part 2

We first see Minato in his part of the battle. By using special tags tied to Kunai, he is able to teleport over all of the battle field and take out entire squads of ninja. What do you expect from the 4th hokage? Meanwhile, Obito, trying to save Rin is caught. Kakashi, having a change of heart, decides to jump in and save. However, in doing so, he injures and loses his eye. Rin, in the heat of battle develops his Sharingan just in time to be able to save them both. They go to save Rin, but are caught in a cave-in. Obito pushes Kakashi away form a falling rock, but is crushed in the process. While lying there, clearly already dead, and without any hope, Obito offers Kakashi a gift for becoming a Junin. His still good Sharingan eye. Rin, teary-eyed, performs the surgery. Now with more than two eyes, Kakashi is able to defeat the remaining ninja. Just as more start to arrive, Minato come and helps the team not only survive, but complete the mission. ever since, Kakashi was changed, and has taken on some of the characteristics of Obito as an homage.
