Episode 80: Last Words
For the last moments of Asuma (yeah, sorry, he’s really dead folks), this is a surprisingly slow moving episode. Asuma, as we know, is mortally wounded. Just like the sun coming out as you leave the beach, backup shows up just in time to watch the Akatsuki members be called away. Asuma, now lying with no hope of surviving, uses his last moments to say some last words to his team. He speaks with Shikamaru last and tells him that he finally understands who the “king” is that Ninjas must protect. It’s whispered so that we cannot hear, but Shikamaru act shocked at the news. Asuma smokes one last cigarrette and dies.
As a personal side note, it’s refreshing to have a series where important characters are killed off. I realize that sounds rather cruel, but work with me here: If everyone always survived, it would diminish the fights. It’s like the Superman syndrome. After a while, Superman was just too invincible and the stories started losing their edge. So they had to kill him off (not really, but you get the idea) to make the story more interesting. Here, we have seen two major characters die in their service, with no miracle saves, coming back to life, none of the cheesy stuff. They died. Now the door is open to kill just about anyone off. Fights aren’t the same anymore.
Episode 81: Sad News
This is an interesting Episode. Ever wonder what Akatsuki was up to? Well read on friend. First, however, let’s talk about Naruto. He is still struggling with the new technique that he is developing, namely the art of combining Elemetal chakra with his chakra manipulation. Being described as trying to look left and right at the same time, he becomes frustrated at the diffiuculty. Meanwhile Akatsuki begin sealing the two-tailed beast. While doing so, some of the members become frustrated at the lack of knowledge about what they were doing. So the leader decides to explain the plan. It’s simple, but complicated at the same time. Essentially, the idea is to create war. They will rent themselves out as mercenaries, at a cheaper rate than the great nations, thus putting those villages out of business. In doing so, Akatsuki will be in the right position to become the leading military power and take over the world. It’s kind of a stretch, but I wish them well…
Back in Konoha, however, Naruto talks with Kakashi who inspires the idea to use two shadow clones to create both the manipulation as well as the wind chakra. Essentially he uses three versions of himself all doing a different role. As he works on it, however, we are giving a good slap in the face by the ending credits.
Episode 82: Team 10
The funeral for Asuma is held. Most everyone is in attendance. Most. Shikamaru, even though he’s dressed for the occasion, does not attend. Instead he slowly walks through the village, even once having to inform a lady, with a certain sense of apathy, that Asuma was killed in the line of duty. As he continues his stroll, he continues to act uneffected by the death, but also drawn more inward, as if pondering something. That night, Shikamaru plays shogi with his father, who speaks about the issue. After some prodding, Shikamaru finally bursts and lets his feelings explode out of him. After he relieves himself of his pent up emotions, he sits down and begins to come up with some strategies for how to deal with Akatsuki. The next morning Shikamaru, Choji and Ino leave to follow through with Shikamaru’s plan. Tsunade, however, stops them before they leave, refusing to let them go on such a suicide mission. Kakashi arrives, however, offering to take them and help them out. Grudgingly the 5th Hokage agrees, and the new Team 10 leaves.
Episode 83: Target: Locked on
They didn’t really drag anything out on this one. I honestly expected the process of finding and engaging akatsuki again would have taken several episodes. Nope. The very next episode they’re back at it, fighting away. Before we get to that fight however, Tsunade asks Naruto’s team to go and help Shikimaru. In order for them to go, however, Naruto has to perfect his technique within 24 hours. Naturally, he’s up for the challenge. Now back to fighting.
After Hidan and Kakuzu finish sealing the two-tailed beast, they set themselves back on track for Konoha, the prize being Naruto. Shikimaru and team catch up to them and using some very clever traps, both members are trapped in shikimaru’s shadow bind technique (for clarity sake, he traps them by using Asuma’s blades which were imbued with Shikimaru’s chakra). Shikimaru then uses Hidan to attack Kakazu, but Kakuzu escapes by having detached his arm before being trapped. Hidan is forced to continue attacking however, when Choji then attacks Kakuzu. Of course, you know how these things go by know. The episode just ends it at that.
Episode 84: Kakuzu’s Abilities
Probably just because it would be boring if Choji’s attack actually killed the guy, Kakuzu comes out unharmed. However, Kakshi notices something in the attack and sneaks behind Kakuzu and stabs him using his Lightning Natured Chidori. (By the way, Yamato explains to Naruto that certain elements have natural weaknesses to other elements. Earth is weak to lightning, wind is weak against fire.) Kakashi notices that Kakuzu was using earth based techniques to protect himself and he uses that to his advantage. When it appears that he has died, he suddenly jumps back up attacking Kakashi. By now Shikimaru is weakened and unable to hold Hidan any longer. Kakuzu then takes off his cloak to reveal 4 masks stiched to his back. One of the masks was broken from Kakashi’s attack. These masks literally rip themselves from their host, turning into strange black entities. The one with the broken mask immediately dies. Hidan then strikes, attacking Kakashi. While they are fighting, one of the black creatures releases a huge wind nature attack. Then another black creature sends a huge lightning attack towards the rest of the team. Kakashi arrives just in time to block the lightning with his bare hands. Hidan mentions that they are the first to survive the attack. Then the last remaining creature sends a huge fire attack their way, charring what’s left of the woods around them. We don’t know what damage is done to the team.
Episode 85: Terrifying Secret
So, this episode really acts as a preparatory episode for later, more intense episodes. Because of that, not a whole lot happens, and it really takes it’s time in order to preserve most of the action for the next couple episodes. Because of Kakuzu’s five hearts, Shikamaru leads Hidan away from Kakuzu away into a forest where Shikimaru can fight him alone. Meanwhile, Kakuzu merges two of his “heart creatures” into one large montster. Kakashi then finds himself battling this creature doing the best he can to stay alive. Back in the forest, Hidan manages to cut Shikimaru, and starts the ceremony that cost Asuma his life. Taking out his large metal spike, he then stabs himself in the chest, as Shikimaru watches.
Episode 86: Shikimaru’s Genius
So we ended the previous episode watching Hidan stab himself while Shikamaru watches in horror. With his demented laugh Hidan watches as Shikimaru falls to the ground. Thinking he has won the fight, he turns to walk away. Just then, Shikimaru jumps up slashing at Hidan’s throat nearly cutting his head off. Hidan is shocked and unable to understand why he is still alive. Shikimaru then binds him with his shadow once again, and then proceeds to explain that the blood he had ingested was in fact Kakuzu’s blood, which Kakashi stole earlier. You then see a couple of scenes where Kakashi steals the blood, hands it off to Shikimaru, and how he fakes an injury using Kakuzu’s blood. Meanwhile, as Kakashi and Kakuzu are battling, Kakuzu suddenly stops his attack short, grabbing his chest (where Hidan had stabbed himself). The curse works, and Kakuzu falls dead. Just then, the creatures that came out of his back suddenly start rushing toward the dead body. The team of ninjas are unable to stop one of those creatures from giving his heart back to Kakuzu’s body, reviving him. He then splits his own body apart, with strands coming out of every limb and his back, and releases another deadly set of elemental attacks at the team of Ninjas. Just then, Team 7 shows up to block the attack with the countering wind/water attack.
Episode 87: When You Curse Someone, You Dig Your Own Grave
The next episode keeps things moving right along. Shikimaru’s still holding Hidan with his technique. The only problem is that it seems to be wanning. Hidan slowly stands up and starts to move toward Shikimaru. Shikimaru mearly baits him by acting scared, as when Hidan was in the right position, Shikimaru suddenly increases his shadow strength and then uses his shadow to reach out to all of the explosive tags he set up. He wraps Hidan in the tags, then opens up a gaping hole in the ground that he prepared earlier. As it turns out, Shikimaru had planned all of this well in advance, and Hidan is shocked by the foresight of the plan. Trapped and helpless, Hidan starts cursing at Shikimaru. Paying him no attention, Shikimaru then sees a vision of Asuma, in which the “Will of Fire” (or will to protect one’s friends in the the fire country) is passed on to Shikimaru. He then throws the lighter at Hidan. Meanwhile, Team 7 sends Sai and Sakura to help Shikimaru out. Naruto starts to prepare his half-finished new technique as Yamato explains that he is about to see a completely new Naruto. We then get a glimpse of the eyes of Naruto which are slit, similar to when he starts to release the Kyuubi, only they remain blue, showing no influence of the monster inside.
Episode 88:Wind Style – Spiraling Shuriken
Naruto finishes setting up his technique and starts to attack Kakuzu. He sent in a couple of clones earlier to gain combat experience against Kakuzu (which really impressed Kakashi that Naruto had taken that skill a step further), from which he new that he would need at least three clones to keep him sufficiently occupied until he landed the technique. So, after sending in the clones (that phrase is just screaming for a cheesy pun joke, but I’ll resist) he rushes at Kakuzu with the new rasengan in his hand. Just before landing the deadly blow, he loses the technique and it fizzles away. Yamato and Kakashi jump and save Naruto before Kakuzu can have his way. Meanwhile, Shikimaru’s tags do a nasty number on the body of Hidan. Small body parts find themselves at the bottom of the large grave. However, true do his nature, he is absolutely immortal, and his head continues to scream and yell at Shikimaru, cursing the whole way. Shikimaru finishes the deal by using another exploding tag to bury Hidan, once and for all. He finds the lighter, and then leaves, catching up with Sakura and Sai. The pary then sets to meet up with the rest of the group. Going back to Naruto, he wants to take another try at the deadly akatsuki. Everyone objects saying that the same thing won’t work twice. He insists, thinking about Sasuke, that if he can’t cross this bridge, he won’t be able to grow up. The group obliges. He then sets up for another run, and Kakuzu switches his body for a more long range fight (thinking that he needs to stay away from the technique). Again, naruto sends in three clones. Kakuzu mearly flies above them, heading toward the Naruto bearing the new rasengan. Kakuzu attacks and stops Naruto, only to find it was a clone and that Naruto had anticipated that attack. From behind, the real Naruto then unleashes the full power of the technique on Kakuzu. Caught in a huge blast of countless wind attacks, Kakuzu falls limp, battered, and undoubtedly dead.
Episode 89: The Price of Power
Now knowing that they have defeated their Akatsuki enemies, the Konoha Ninjas take the opportunity to view the situation. Kakashi takes a moment to reflect on the power of the ninjas that he once called his students. He now realizes that they are no longer below him, but on equal ground and that the time for the next generation to take over the responsibility of protecting the village has come. They gather their things, take Kakuzu’s body and return to Konoha. Shikimaru returns to Asuma’s grave where he runs into Kurenai. After a conversation he tells Kurenai that he wants to grow up to be like Asuma so that he can be as great of a leader and teacher. He also points out that Kurenai is pregnant with Asuma’s baby. Shikimaru then returns home where he plays shogi with his father. Here he reveals what Asuma told him as he was dieing. The true king of Konoha is the Next Gereration that will take over responsibility. Konoha also perfomrs an autopsy on Kakuzu. They find that Naruto’s technique completely severs all chakra lines to the cells, completely destroying the opponent as well as their ability to control chakra. Unfortunately, Naruto also suffers by using the technique, and will lose his ability to mold chakra if he continues to use the technique. In another part of the story, Orochimaru learns of the death of the Akatsuki Members. He sends Kabuto to a women names Guren, whom remains a mystery, but appears to be as dangerous as Orochimaru.
Episode 90: A Shinobi’s Determination
In the beginning of this episode, we see an anbu running away from some unseen force. Just before passing away, he manages to get out a message via pigeon. Not knowing what the message says we move over to Guren who, by request from Orochimaru, sends hundred of creatures (men perhaps turned into specimens) on each other to battle for some unknown purpose or mission. Naruto, meanwhile is warned to never use his new technique. He vows to create a technique that doesn’t have such a high cost in order to save Sasuke. Back at Orochimaru’s Lair, Sasuke pauses next to a river where he sees a boy named Yukimaru. Kabuto shows up and takes Yukimaru away. We still don’t know who he is or what purpose he will play. Tsunade then gets the note sent by Anbu, which gives information on the whereabouts of Orochimaru’s hideout. To investigate, she sends the best scouting Ninjas in Konoha: Shino, Kiba, Hinata and Kakashi. Jiraya also appears offering to train Naruto once again.

when will the summaries of the next episodes be available??
Comment by simca — June 1, 2009 @ 3:40 pm
The summaries for this filler arc will be uploaded all at once. I’m not going to do an episode by episode summary just because it’s filler, and it’s painful enough to watch, much less read and write about. Fortunately, this next episode will mark the end of this filler story line.

There is a HUGE slip-up/blooper in Naruto Shippuden Episode 84:
Kakashi attacks Kakuzu because he notices that Kakuzu used Earth hand seals, saying, “Earth is weak against lightning. You got matched with the wrong guy. And now your dead.”
BUT!!!! Earlier in the episode, Yamato drew a diagram to Naruto that described the elemental relationships like this: Fire –> Wind –> Earth –> Lightning –> Water –> Fire. In other words, this diagram shows that Fire is strong against wind, weak against water. Wind is strong against earth, weak against Fire. Earth is STRONG AGAINST LIGHTNING, and weak against wind. Lightning is strong against water, and weak against Earth. And Water is strong against Fire, weak against Lightning.
Therefore, Kakashi’s lightning technique should have NEVER WORKED. Just think about it, why would lightning be strong against earth? It only makes sense that wind is strong against earth because of the fact that Wind is constantly eroding the mountains and all the surfaces of the earth into dust. Did anyone else catch this huge blooper!?

@jonathan
actually, i believe the diagram showed Fire –> wind –> lightning –> earth –> water, and as Yamato was explaining things, naruto’s wind technique was strong against sasuke’s ultimate attack which is lightning (chidori), so actually… lightning is WEAK to wind, STRONG to earth, and earth is WEAK to lightning, STRONG to water, so Kakashi’s lightning technique would have worked

Episode 80- I completely agree with what you said about important characters dying. In life, the good guys don’t always win. This is one of the reasons I really like Naruto and Naruto Shippuden. It recognizes death and loss, as real life would.
